Location
Natchez was first selected by the Natchez Indians, and later by such noted French explorers as La Salle, Iberville and Bienville. What caused them to make their selection has not changed. Elevation, health, climate and easy transportation.
The city is located on a 200-foot bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. This bluff is not from a natural hill, but was caused by the action of wind blowing silt and soil from the west (bess soil) possibly during the glacial period.
Natchez is located 177 miles by highway north of New Orleans, and 296 miles by highway south of Memphis. From a geographic standpoint, Natchez is truly a key distributing city of the lower Mississippi Valley.
